FAQ
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.
While an HMI is used to control a single machine, SCADA is the high-level system used to monitor and control an entire plant or multiple production lines. Visualisation in SCADA involves creating large-scale "Control Room" displays that aggregate data from hundreds of PLCs and sensors. It provides a bird's-eye view of the factory, allowing engineers to track overall production targets, energy consumption, and long-term data trends in one central location.
SCADA in the Singapore Context: Infrastructure & Oversight
In Singapore’s industrial landscape—particularly in mission-critical utilities and large-scale manufacturing—SCADA is the standard for high-level oversight. Its local application focuses on:
Centralised Utility Management: SCADA is extensively used by national agencies and private plants in Singapore to monitor water treatment, power distribution, and district cooling systems across the island.
Historical Data & Compliance: Unlike basic HMIs, SCADA systems include "Historians"—databases that record every event. In Singapore’s Aerospace and MedTech sectors, this data is vital for meeting audit requirements.
Operational Connectivity: Modern SCADA systems in Singapore are increasingly used to bridge the gap between the factory floor and the office (ERP systems), helping management see real-time "Productivity per Shift" data, a key metric for any company.
